U-Pb ON ZIRCON AND MONAZITE GEOCHRONOLOGY OF GRANITES OF THE ZHYTOMYR AND SHEREMETIV COMPLEXES, THE NORTH-WESTERN REGION OF THE UKRAINIAN SHIELD

Abstract: New results of U-Pb dating of zircon and monazite from granitic rocks of the North-Western region of the Ukrainian Shield are discussed in the paper and compared with previously obtained data. According to the new data, the Krasna Hirka Massif crystallized at 2077 ± 8 Ma, the Serby Massif at 2061 ± 11 Ma, the Kurchytsya Massif at 2069 ± 4 Ma, the Horodske Massif at 2070 ± 2 Ma, the Oleksandrivka Massif at 2044 ± 9 Ma, and the Susly Massif at 2059 ± 5 Ma. It is shown that granites of the Zhytomyr Complex intruded during several successive phases at 2078, 2072, 2060 and 2045 Ma. Plagiogranites of the Sheremetiv Complex intruded at 2092 and 2078 Ma. It is concluded that the geochronological and isotope-geochemical (Hf and Nd isotope systematics) data contradict the presence of the widely distributed Archaean basement beneath the North-Western region of the Ukrainian Shield. The granitic magmatism in the North-Western region of the Ukrainian Shield is somewhat older than in other regions of the shield and we suggest that it was caused by the subduction of oceanic lithosphere under the northern margin of the Archaean Podillya microcontinent.

Keywords: U-Pb geochronology, granites, Palaeoproterozoic, the Ukrainian Shield.
