GEOCHEMISTRY IN THE M.P. SEMENENKO INSTITUTE OF GEOCHEMISTRY, MINERALOGY AND ORE FORMATION OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES OF UKRAINE

Abstract: Historical data on the development of isotope geochemistry and geochronology are presented; these scientific directions developed in Ukraine and have achieved the greatest advance in the Institute of geochemistry and Physic of minerals (now the M.Р. Semenenko Institute of Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Ore Formation (IGMOF) of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine). Thanks to the scientific researches carried out by M.P. Semenenko, M.P. Shcherbak and their colleagues, all major types of rock complexes were dated, the main chronological boundaries and geological events were established, and the modern stratigraphic chart of the Precambrian formations, which conforms to the international chart, was created. A new scientific direction of geological sciences, which synthesizes researches in the fields of mineralogy, petrology and geochemistry, called isotope geology, attained development at the IGMOF. The combination of all of these studies allowed identification of not only the age of the rocks, but also establishing of their genesis and physical and chemical conditions of formation. The developed in the IGMOF geochemical methods of exploration based on mobile forms of elements, have got recognition. These methods, in the territory of the Ukrainian shield allowed finding of promising molybdenum and silicate nickel ore occurrences, and of areas of fluoriitization. The concept of determination of the quantitative links between the integral concentration of chemical elements and the total area of the secondary salt areoles has been developed, opening up new possibilities in the prediction and exploration of mineral deposits. The patterns of distribution of chemical elements and their compounds in the environment (soil, water, sediments, snow) in urban agglomerations were studied. Similar studies were conducted for the different agricultural landscapes of Ukraine, allowing determination of the background and anomalous concentrations of several elements in different landscape-geochemical areas of Ukraine.
