Abstract: The authors have conducted a detailed study of zircon from clastic sedimentary and felsic volcanic rocks that comprise the Huliaipole Syncline in the Azov Domain of the Ukrainian Shield. The investigations included U-Pb dating, Hf isotope composition measurements, and the determination of trace element content in zircon. All studies were conducted using the LA-ICP-MS method. It has been established that the sedimentary-volcanogenic rocks of the Huliaipole Formation, characterized by a thick ferruginous-siliceous sequence, were deposited during the Neoarchean on the Archean craton. Results of the study of zircon extracted from sedimentary and volcanic rocks indicate that the lower part of the Huliaipole Formation was deposited, probably, around 2850 Ma, while andesites and sandstones accumulated around 2775-2765 Ma. The age of the superimposed metamorphism is 2047±10 Ma. The rocks of the tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite association represented the primary source of detrital zircon, whereas two-feldspar granites were absent in the source region. A portion of the zircon population was derived from rocks of dacite-andesite composition, similar to those composing the Huliaipole Formation. Oxygen fugacity corresponds to lower-crustal values. Probable age analogues of the Huliaipole Formation include the Central-Azov Group and metaterrigenous rocks of the Fedorivka greenstone structure; in the Middle-Dnieper Domain, possible analogues are the Saksahan and Skelevatka formations of the Kryvyi Rih Group, and in the Dniester-Bouh Domain, this refers to the Bouh Group.
