Abstract: The mineral component of bone tissue consists predominantly of nanocrystalline carbonate-hydroxyapatite with admixtures of carbonates of different types. The process of thermal decomposition of an iron-bearing carbonate impurity during bone annealing, accompanied by the formation of a magnetically ordered material, was investigated. Ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) was used to study changes in the FMR spectra of powdered samples of three cortical bones of different origins during stepwise heating from 700 to 1000 °C in air. Two types of FMR signals were detected in the annealed samples: a broad asymmetric line characteristic of polycrystalline magnetic materials with crystallographic and shape anisotropy, and superimposed narrow lines attributed to small-domain nanoparticles uniformly dispersed throughout the bone volume and exhibiting no dipole–dipole interaction. The temperature corresponding to the maximum intensity of both types of signals depends on the annealing duration, while their rates of increase differ among bones of different origins, which may be used for comparative analysis of healthy and diseased bones, as well as samples from animals kept under different conditions. It was established that the aggregated and dispersed particles have the same composition and correspond to the same magnetic material. Short-term annealing results in complex spectra due to the formation of nanoparticles of different magnetic phases or crystals of different sizes, whereas prolonged annealing promotes the formation of a monomineralic magnetic substance. The results of control annealing of siderite ore with a predominant content of ankerite showed that, in the 700-900 °C range, the change in the intensity of its FMR spectrum follows the same pattern as that observed in bone tissue. It was established that a complex iron–magnesium carbonate of the ankerite group, with a composition of Ca(Fe, Mg)(CO₃)₂, is formed in the bones.

Keywords: ferromagnetic resonance (FMR), bone tissue, ankerite, thermal decomposition, carbonates.
